January 26, 1938 – December 20, 2024
Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light. Matthew 11: 28-30
It is with heavy hearts that the Massaquoi and Kennedy families share the news of Samuel Tonie Massaquoi’s passing. He was our beloved husband, father, brother, cousin, friend, and confidant. Samuel left this world on Friday, December 20, 2024, at his home in Congo Town, Monrovia, Liberia. Samuel was a remarkable individual whose warmth and kindness impacted the lives of so many.
Samuel T. Massaquoi had a remarkable career marked by dedicated service and leadership. From 1969 to 1976, Samuel dedicated himself to shaping the future of countless Liberians as the Chairman of the Social and African Studies Department at William V.S. Tubman High School, while also sharing his knowledge as a part-time lecturer at the University of Liberia. His passion for education continued to flourish when he became the Chairman of the Department of African Studies at the College of West Africa from 1976 to 1978. Through his inspiring leadership, many of his students blossomed into prominent figures, leaving a lasting impact on both Liberia and the world. Samuel’s commitment to service didn’t end with education; he furthered his journey at the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LW & SC), where he held critical roles, including Deputy Managing Director for Administration and Deputy Managing Director for Outstations. From 2000 to 2020, he channeled his expertise into making a difference as a Management Consultant at the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation, where his invaluable guidance continued to touch lives and uplift communities.
Samuel is survived by his wife of 48 years, Leona Kennedy Massaquoi, and his cherished children: Miatta Massaquoi Condon, Siatta T. Massaquoi King (husband Dmitri), Pitman Charles Clarke (wife Jane), Claus T. Massaquoi (wife Seyenia), and Sandimmie Massaquoi. He will be dearly missed by his daughter-in-law, Bindu Nimley Massaquoi, and his beloved sisters, Zoe Massaquoi Thompson, Edwina Massaquoi, Fatu Massaquoi, Hannah Massaquoi, and Facia Massaquoi. Samuel also leaves a loving legacy of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many loving relatives who will live his cherished memories.
