It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Marie Dean Brown, affectionately known as “Ma Marie.” She graced our lives as a devoted mother, sister, aunt, cousin, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.
Marie’s journey reached its peaceful conclusion on Thursday, August 24, 2023, surrounded by her loving family at the home of her daughter, Catherine Bestman Kittoe, in Plainfield, IL.
She was predeceased by her parents, Mamadee and Sophia Dean, her beloved spouse Col Samuel B. Brown, her sons, Victor and Sylvester Bestman, her sisters, Comfort Dean Seahfa and Regina Hardy Nelson, and her cherished aunt, Hawa Robertson.
Marie leaves behind a legacy of boundless love and a close-knit family, survived by her cherished children: Jerome M. Hodge, Reginald Hodge, Regina Bestman Gardiner (George), Catherine Kittoe (Walter), Gabriel Archie Brown (Bianca), Wede Hodge, Catherine Baker, Cascious Brown, Ricky Brown, Gloria Brown, and Malfred Brown.
She was the adored grandmother of Regina, Steven, Thomas, Wannie, Melvin, Jerome, Lisa, Rachelle, Gerald, Susan, Fannie, Melvina, Ama Waltlyne, Darling, Gabriel Jr., Gabby, Andrew, Victor, Nicky, Reginald Luckie, Shawn, Tenneka, Emanuel Jr, Karmaya, Brianna, Regis, Richard, Cascious Jr, and Britney.
She was a beloved aunt to Patrick Mannah, Michael Mannah, Dr. BK Robertson, and William Burlich. Marie was also a cherished great-grandmother, and her memory continues to radiate in the hearts of numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends, both in Liberia and abroad.
Marie’s legacy is one of boundless love, infectious laughter, and immeasurable compassion—a legacy that will forever be treasured by all whose lives she touched.
