“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4)
The Kyne, Tay, Lawry, Doe, Reeves-Bull, Cassell, and Greene families regret to announce the homegoing of Doris Todae Kyne Greene, our beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother, who transitioned peacefully on October 31, 2024, in Newark, NJ.
Doris Kyne was born in Doudoken, Cape Palmas, Liberia, to George and Annie Kyne, and soon established herself as the most talkative child in their large household. When Isaac Doe, whom she fondly called “Bubba Isaac,” began courting her older sister Mary, Doris enjoyed talking with him and reporting the events of the day.
Following their marriage, when it was time for Mary to join Isaac in the United States, she moved Doris and another sister, Sarah, to Monrovia. As was customary in those days, young children from the interior who planned to travel or relocate to countries abroad often remained in the care of Monrovia-based families until their departure. Doris stayed with the Cassell family, attending the high school at Monrovia College until Mary finalized the arrangements to bring her to America in 1967.
For a short time after her arrival in the States, Doris lived with Mary and her family in Brooklyn, NY. She then moved to New Jersey — the state that she would call home for the rest of her life — to live with her sister, Sarah and her family. Later, Doris became a resident of Father Divine Boarding House in downtown Newark, where she met and fell in love with Vance Lawry. In time, Doris and Vance married and had three sons: Abu, Kassiem and Rashad.
Doris attended Essex County College and earned an associate’s degree in business administration. She subsequently became a paraprofessional with the New Jersey State Government, working with special-needs children — a position she held for 28 years until her retirement.
Doris enjoyed playing scratch-off lottery games and was passionate about Liberian politics, engaging in frequent discussions and debates with her fellow immigrants.
In later years, as her health declined and she became less mobile, it wasn’t uncommon to call and hear Spoon TV or Henry Costa playing in the background.
Doris was a generous, nurturing and unassuming soul — one that frequently placed the needs of others before her own. In the words of her son Kassiem “She gave so much and wanted nothing in return.”
She leaves to mourn her death, her children: Abu, Kassiem (daughter-in-law Shawanta) and Rashad Lawry; her siblings: Sarah Tay (brother-in-law Benjamin), Mariah and Lucy Kyne, and Solomon Bannie Kyne (sister-in-law Eliza); 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, and friends throughout Liberia and the US.
Doris was pre-deceased by her parents and 12 of her siblings. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
