Once again with profound sadness and heavy hearts, the Seke, Grandoe and Dortu Families announce the death of our Brother, Father and Uncle, Mr. K.B.Blamon Seke Jr, or BBSK, which sad event occurred at the family’s residence on Tequah Road, Bushrod Island, Liberia in his 70th year.
He was born in Bomi Hills, now Tubmanburg in Bomi Territory, now Bomi County. He later moved with his parents to Camp Johnson Road in Monrovia, Liberia. In the early 1960s, he began his primary education at the Soul Clinic Gospel Mission, Paynesville, Liberia.
By the end of the 1960s, his parents moved the family to Yekepa, Nimba County, where his father was employed by the Liberian American Mining Company or LAMCO. Blamon attended the LAMCO international School or E- School in Yekepa. Later on, to the
Gbarnga Methodist High School. And matriculated to the Lutheran Training Institute
in Salayea, Lofa County, graduating in 1977.
William V S Tubman Gray United
Methodist School in Gbarnga, Bong County, popularly known as
He enrolled at the University of Liberia for two semesters but left the university, over the lecturer’s decision to remove him from his seat, which he had suffered to get into the class; just for a girl to sit on. Blamon felt that the lecturer took advantage over him, as the lecturer was interested in the girl. Not wanting to hit the lecturer or fight back, Blamon walked out of class and out of the university, never to return to it. He strongly took offense to anyone trying to take advantage, coward or bully him. If you tried to, you were looking for your own trouble. it was better you stayed far away from him for your own safety, considering his height and built.
After leaving the university, he enrolled at the Mano River Forestry Training Institute, in Tubmanburg, then Bomi Hills, Bomi County and graduated as a Forest Ranger. He worked with the Liberian Forestry Development Authority (FDA) for several years. Later left and went into private business, operating a transport venture.
For fear of his life at the beginning of the civil war in 1990, he traveled to Lofa County. Later, as the war escalated, he moved to Sierra Leone. And continued his transport business, running his pickup truck on the Kenema to Freetown Highway, transporting market women and their goods. Later on, he worked for Pacific Atlantic Engineer(PAE), a logistic support company to ECOMOG stationed in Sierra Leone. He worked with them for several years before returning to Liberia.
Blamon was a fervent basketball lover and skilled player, very tough on the courts. In the 70s to the 80s he played active basketball in Yekepa with his colleagues on Area P and Area E courts. His size had many respect and feared him on the court, thus he was given the nickname Big Blam or Bulldozer in basketball. He played basketball for all the school teams he attended and was always chosen to play on the school’s first team, because he was a no-nonsense player, displaying his physical strength. Even the referees were afraid to cheat or call fouls against him.
He also helped developed and trained the Sierra Leone National Basketball team during his refugee days, serving as their coach, they called him ‘Coachey’. He also coached other basketball and youth teams in Freetown. He served as a basketball coach and advisor for his beloved county, Bomi County, for several years.
Blamon was also known as the ‘Transporter.’ Between non-working days, he ran his Toyota pickup truck from Tubmanburg(Bomi Hills) to Monrovia. That
occupation earned him the nickname ‘Sidikey’. Most people who rode with him thought he was a Guinean national because there was no free ride.
The market women loved him so much, because he was one of the few drivers that will take and get them from the remote villages and take them to the nearest town; so they can sell their goods, especially on market days. Or take them to Duala Market. What they loved about him mostly is that he will let th pay him after selling their goods. In all his doings, he had a very loving heart for the market women he dealt with. He held several positions in various Drivers and Transport Unions in Bomi and Gbarpolu Counties and around the Duala market area.
From childhood, he was raised as a United Methodist within the Georgia Patten United Methodist Church, Old Kru Town, Waterside, Monrovia. Later became a founding member of the Yekepa United Methodist Church in Yekepa, Nimba County in the early 1970s. He was a member of the Youth Ministry, later he joined the Young Adult Ministry then unto the Men Ministry. For many years he participated in the UMC Youth and Young Adult Ministries’ camps as a Counselor and was very handy with transporting the campers to and from camp sites. Today’s adults have many stories about their experiences with him, especially about him disciplining them. He was also a member and frequent visitor of several United Methodist Churches and other churches around Monrovia
Like his father, he was a disciple of John Wesley’s teachings and a firm believer of Methodism. When it comes to Methodism, he would dare challenge and argue with any Methodist Pastor or scholar about Methodism that he did not find pleasing or in accordance with the faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents B. Blamon Seke and Rev. Nacy Seke, sisters Waw Susanah Seke, and Sijlah Kipidi Seke. He leaves to mourn his son B. Blamon Seke III, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, several brothers and sisters; and other relatives. May his soul Rest In Peace.
