The Barchue, Korma, Sallor, Karbar, Sackie, Corcoran, Abdullai, and White families announce with great sadness the passing of their beloved father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend, Joseph P. Barchue on August 24, 2023. This sad event took place at the U.A.B Hospital, Birmingham, Alabama, U. S. A. Joseph P. Barchue was born on October 25, 1959 to the union of Mr. Robert Barchue and Miss Pillah Korma, of Grand Bassa County.
Joseph P. Barchue attended and graduated from St. Peter’s Clever Junior High School, Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, Liberia. He graduated from Christian High School, Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, Liberia. He successfully completed and graduated from the Physician Assistant training program at the Tubman National Institute of Medical Arts (TNIMA), Monrovia, Liberia. He received his Bachelor of Science, Health Administration from Kennedy’s Western University, USA.
Dr. Albert White recruited Joseph P. Barchue, a Physician Assistant from Monrovia in 1983 to begin working with the Onchocerciasis Research Project in Liberia at the Liberia Agricultural Company, L.A.C. Joseph worked in Liberia for the Oncho Project until 1991 when he transferred to the United States to continue working here after the civil crises in Liberia worsened. He worked as a Research Associate in the labs of Drs. Bruce Greene and Thomas Unnach in the Division of Geographic Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, UAB. Then, he moved on and worked with Drs. Raymond Benza, François Booyse, and Steven Pogwizd, all physicians from the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases at UAB until his retirement in April 2021.
Joseph P. Barchue leaves to mourn his loss his children Patience Barchue Sallor, Stephen Barchue, and Urias Barchue, eight grandchildren, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, foster children, and a hosts of other relatives and friends here in the United States and in Liberia.
Public viewing will be at Integrity Funeral Home at 1011 Brooklane Dr. #E, Hueytown, AL 35023 from 2-6 PM on Friday, September 15, 2023. A second viewing will take place on Saturday morning, September 16, 2023 at Saint Paul’s Cathedral, 2120 3rd Ave N, Birmingham, AL 35203 at 9:30 AM. Funeral service starts promptly at 10:30 AM. This will be followed by interment at Oakland Cemetery at 1140 Warrior Road, Birmingham, AL 35218.
