It is with deep sadness and gratitude to God for a life well lived, that the Nyonnoh family announce the passing of our beloved father, patriarch, grandfather, and friend, John Yanquio Nyonnoh.
John Y. Nyonnoh, born November 11, 1936, in Montserrado County, Liberia, in the town of Belle Yalla, passed away surrounded by the legacy of a life marked by resilience, humor, faith, generosity, and service.
Born to Tor Zgbio and TB Nyonnoh, John was raised by Emmit and Nancy Cooper and grew up as the third oldest of six siblings. He attended Seventh-day Adventist schools for both grade school and high school, where his early faith and strong sense of community began to take root. Later in life, he converted to the Baptist faith and remained a faithful servant of God for the rest of his life, devoted to worship, family, and helping others.
John began his professional career at the National Bank of Liberia, where he served for many years as an Authorized Signer Officer in the Logistics Section of the Administrative Department. He was admired not only for his professionalism and strong work ethic, but also for his compassion and generosity. Those who knew him in Liberia often remembered how he would generously offer support to individuals in need whom he encountered on his way from work, believing deeply in sharing his blessings with others.
In his 30s, John was initiated as a Free Mason in Liberia, a reflection of the leadership, discipline, and service that defined his character throughout his life.
After emigrating to the United States in 1986, John continued his life of hard work and service in security with Securitas where he received Security Officer of the Year in 2009. In 2014, he became a concierge at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. His presence there became familiar and appreciated by many. He was known not only for the work he did, but for the warmth he brought to those around him. If you knew John, you knew his humor. He was incredibly funny, quick with a comeback, and always able to make people laugh, even during difficult moments.
John also carried a lifelong love for lottery games, a simple joy that reflected his hopeful spirit and belief in possibility.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his four brothers and two sisters; becoming the last living of his immediate family line.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, faith, and service, cherished by his children: John (Pamela), Alvin, Willis (Lorraine), Ruth, and Maima (Abraham); 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and friends who will continue to honor and celebrate his memory.
John Y. Nyonnoh’s life was one of quiet strength, deep faith, generosity, and unforgettable humor. His voice, laughter, wisdom, and kindness will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in all those whose lives he touched.
