Lots of Liberians, including myself are trying to cope with feelings of worry and stress we are experiencing during these times of political uncertainty in our beloved country.
On the eve of our general elections, lots of Liberians and rightfully so have fears or worries about national security. This fear has resulted in us feeling anxious or worried about things over which we have little control. What is expected of us during these uncertain political times in our beloved country is to always strive for unity, compassion, and kindness.
As responsible citizens, we should avoid the rumors mill by always staying informed. In doing so, we should rely on credible and trustworthy sources of information for news updates, guidance, and advice.
This one might be extremely difficult, but it might be wise to take a break from social media, especially Facebook. During times of uncertainty, the hypothesis has long been established that social media tends to be full of people posting opinions, articles, conspiracies, petitions, disagreements, and misinformation. By temporarily avoiding social media, we might have the space to process our own thoughts and feelings without being influenced by others.
Let’s not fool ourselves, during times of political uncertainty, there will be public demonstrations. These demonstrations could escalate quickly; therefore, we should do everything possible to stay away. Perhaps, some of us might get caught up in a situation where we might need to call for help fast. It might be a good idea to enter emergency numbers in our phones, wallets or bags.
The extremely terrible mob violence that occurred yesterday at the Bardnersville junction on the Somalia Highway was a hate crime, and should be condemned by everyone. Woefully; during times of political uncertainty, reports of hate crimes and verbal abuse are not uncommon. However, the more compassion and understanding we are able to exhibit toward others—friends and strangers alike—perhaps the less tension-filled our beloved country will be.
As stated in our national anthem, With God above Our rights to prove we will o’er all prevail, we will o’er all prevail; therefore, let’s strive to exhibit unity, compassion and kindness.
