This is to announce, with profound regrets and sorrow, the passing of our beloved, in his 71st year, Charles Charbay Newton, Jr. He transitioned on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, in Grand Blanc, MI, at about midday, after a period of health challenges.
Charles Charbay Newton, Jr. ( called by his maternal side as Tulor), and by childhood friends and neighbors variously as Charbay, Charlie and Junior, was born in Greenville, Sinoe County, Liberia, West Africa, on Saturday, July 25, 1953. He was the third child born unto the union of Charles and Margaret Dawade Newton, both of Karloway District, Maryland County, Liberia.
When Charles, Jr was 3, in 1956 , his parents relocated to Pleebo, Maryland County after living in Sinoe for 12 years. He then began his early schooling at Grant Memorial Methodist and later St. Francis Junior high, all in Pleebo before leaving for high school in 1968 at Our Lady of Fatima High in Harper City, Maryland County. He was known for varsity football, playing left defensive back, for his high school. He also served in the school choir and student leadership. But most notably, his academic performance was legendary, consistently placing at the top or near top yearly in all his classes, including double promotion.
Charles graduated Our Lady of Fatima High, Maryland Liberia (1971), St. John Fisher College, Rochester, NY (BA-1978) and Clarke Atlanta University (MBA-1983). He did a stint at the University of Liberia, 1972-73, before matriculating to St John Fisher in 1974 at age 21. He would go on to live and work in the United States for 50 years. He worked in the automobile manufacturing industry (finance/accounting) for nearly 40 years, first with General Motors -25 years and later with Chrysler Corporation -14 years. Charles was a consummate professional and a scholar.
Charles is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Matthews Newton of Flint, MI. He is also survived by three sons, Julian (Katrice), Joseph and Kassabli and his stepdaughter Monica McBride. His surviving siblings are Rose Newton Ezike (Emmanuel-deceased), Wellington N. Toe Newton (Teresa Korvah), Danlette Nimpson (Anthony), residing in the United States, as well as David P. Newton, Barley I. Newton (Rogers) (residing in Liberia) and Margaret Newton-Bos (residing in London, UK).
He also leaves to mourn his memory, several grandchildren, a great grand, several nephews and nieces, cousins and other relatives in Europe, United States and Liberia.
He was predeceased by his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Newton, Sr, and his two oldest siblings, Edmund Newton, Sr and Mai Brown.
May his soul rest in perfect peace and the light perpetual shine on him.
