With deep sorrow, the Freeman, Burton, Bates, and Knuckles families announce the sudden passing of our cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, niece, and cousin, Maude Burton Freeman. This heartbreaking event occurred on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at 9:00 a.m. EST, at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington D.C., USA.
She is survived by her children: Lucretia Freeman-Buster (Morris), Laurinda Freeman-Massey (Grady), Cynthia Freeman (Kudjo), David Freeman Jr., Omodele Anderson (Cheyenne), Williametta Cooper (James), George Sackie (Lawretha). Additionally, she is mourned by her precious grandchildren: Teddy Williams, Ashley Buster-Ogunwuyi (Moses), Melvin Anderson (Erika), Lamina Buster, Maurissa Buster, Grady Massey Jr., Madiba Massey, Tanneh Woyee, Marcia Davies, Edem Hosi, David Freeman III, Kevin Freeman, Danyelle Freeman, Javaughn Freeman, David Freeman IV, Laurinda Freeman, Taylor Anderson, Parker Anderson, Willitta Cooper, James Cooper III, Laura Sackie, and Diamond Sackie. Her great-grandchildren include Alycea, Iya, Ari, and Kamia.
She is also survived by her brothers, Charles Hungerford Burton (Edna), William Burton and Jimmy Sackie, and her sisters, Esther Burton and Cecelia Burton. Maude also leaves behind aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, close relatives, and dear friends.
Maude was preceded in death by her husband, David Wilson Freeman Sr., her beloved mother, Sarah Iyee Knuckles, father, William Webster Burton, sister, Musu Massaquoi, and brother, William Knuckles.
