MONROVIA — A devastating accident occurred today at Gomoa Okyereko on the Accra-Cape Coast highway in the Central Region of Ghana, resulting in the loss of 16 lives and leaving 40 individuals injured. Majority of the victims and survivors are believed to be Liberians.
The collision involved a Yutong bus en route from Liberia to Budumburam and a fuel tanker heading towards Takoradi. The tragic incident took place around 5 am on Tuesday, May 30, 2023.
Emergency services, including the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), swiftly responded to the scene in an effort to rescue the victims. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined, as reported by the GNFS. However, eyewitnesses revealed that the Yutong bus driver had been intermittently straying from his lane throughout the journey.
Winneba Fire Service Commander DO II Kwesi Hughes recounted the sequence of events, stating, “The tanker driver unexpectedly veered into the Yutong’s lane, coinciding with the moment the Yutong driver had also encroached into his lane.” Immediate efforts were focused on rescuing those who could be saved, and they were promptly transported to the trauma and specialist hospital.
The scene of the accident was described as profoundly distressing, with Commander Hughes sadly noting, “In fact, people have been dismembered.” Alongside the GNFS, the National Ambulance Service and the Police Service were present at the site to provide support and assistance during this devastating incident.
