Martha George Freeman, daughter of the late Nyankun George and Sayonnon Johnnie, who predeceased her to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gives us life, liberty, and more abundantly. She was born on November 29, 1949, in Timbo, Grand Kru County. Martha was baptized into the Christian faith at an early age at the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Kingsville #7 Township. She was the fifth of five children, all of whom predeceased her. Martha started her education at Kingsvilleve #7 Elementary School, then attended The Presbyterian Todee School, where she graduated and enrolled in MCSS, then participated for one year before enrolling in the Kakata Teachers Institute and graduating. The principal then recruited her from the Presbyterian Todee Mission after graduation. She taught there for three years where she met the love of her life, Mr. Leroy Freeman Sr and they got married on August 4, 1972, and that union was blessed with six children, Clarence Freeman (predeceased) Leroy Freeman Jr, Florence Freeman Zayzay, Agnes Juah Freeman, Tenezi Freeman (Pinky), and Bai Terrence Freeman (Anne). In the same year, they left for the United States, where she gained employment at The Oxford Hospital, becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant, then later trained as a Unit Secretary and held that position for 15 years. Martha then found employment with Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden, NJ. Martha, a schoolteacher and compassionate mentor, accepted a job in 1999 as a Case Manager at Lutheran Children and Family Services, where she remained until her retirement in July 2014.
Martha was actively involved in several organizations like Liberian Association of Pennsylvania where she served as Vice President, Union of Liberian Association in the Americas (ULAA)where she served as Director of the Women’s Bureau, President of Friends of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (FOYTAT), Liberian Community Association of South New Jersey (LCASJ), and River Gee County Association in the Americas -New Jersey Chapter (RIGCAA) where she served as president.
Martha was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, cousin, and friend. She leaves to mourn her husband, Leroy Freeman Sr., of 53 years, her five children, fourteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and sisters, Miatta Varfley Tweh, Esther Varfley Dundas, and brothers, Edwin Bishop Varfley and William Varfley. A host of nieces, nephews, and relatives in the United States and Liberia. May her soul and the souls of our departed ones rest in peace.
