With deep sorrow and unwavering faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we announce the peaceful homegoing of our beloved mother, Gretchen Joyce Martin Johnson, affectionately called “Sugarlump”, who entered eternal rest on October 28, 2025, at her residence on Duport Road, Paynesville, Liberia.
Gretchen was a devoted woman of God, a born-again believer, and a dedicated educator who lived a life of prayer, grace, and unconditional love. She served her family, church, and community with humility and compassion, leaving a lasting legacy of faith and kindness.
She is survived by her children: Ottilie I. Johnson, Douglas F. Johnson, Otis K. Johnson (N’sera Keita), and Joyce Johnson Dolo (Stephen Boone).
She is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren: Victor Lewis, Calvin Lewis, Jasmin Johnson, John Johnson, Ottilia Johnson, Felix Johnson, Julia Johnson, Molly Johnson, M’Bembi F. Johnson, Otisha G. Johnson, Christian E. Johnson, Charles G. Taylor, Jayden K. Dolo, Alexis I. Dolo, and several great-grandchildren.
She leaves to mourn her siblings: Joko McGill (deceased), Alexander Martin (deceased), Lysander Martin, Monetta Davies, Samuel Martin, Winnie Martin (deceased), Jeannie Wright, Helena Martin, Angeline Martin, and Handful Martin; along with many loved children including John Dennis, Joseph Johnson, Momo Cephas, Peterson Gbayan, Gregory W. Coleman, Renee Wright Matthew, and Janniedel Haider, and a host of relatives across the United States, Liberia, Sweden, Canada, France, and beyond.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James J. Johnson, her first child, Yvonne D. Johnson, and other beloved family members.
