Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Public Officer
George Bardell Cooper Sr. passed away peacefully on May 21, 2025, in Reston,Virginia, at the age of 85. Born on June 18, 1939, in Lofa County, Liberia, George came to the United States on a scholarship and pursued his education with dedication. He got his undergraduate from Wilmington College, then continued his education at the University of Michigan, and then earned his MBA from the University of Detroit.
George lived a life marked by service, dignity, compassion, and an unwavering devotion to his family and country. George was known for his generosity, deep wisdom, and natural ability to bring people together, whether in a boardroom or at the family dinner table. His words carried weight, and his presence brought calm. He led with integrity and kindness, never seeking praise but only progress.
Professionally, George devoted over 30 years to representing Liberia on the global stage. As Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), he played a major role in shaping international maritime policy and strengthening Liberia’s influence in global shipping. He led national delegations, chaired international committees, and negotiated with countries such as China, Greece, South Korea, and many others. His work helped ensure fair labor conditions for seafarers, safer ships at sea, and greater opportunity for developing nations in global trade.
George’s titles never defined worth. He believed in treating everyone with respect. He had a gift for diplomacy, not just in his career but in everyday life. He enjoyed spending time with family, taking pride in their accomplishments and always offering guidance and encouragement. He could often be found sharing life lessons with his children and grandchildren or participating in his church and found comfort in writing out scriptures from the Bible, a quiet practice that reflected his faith and discipline.
After retiring from diplomacy, George brought that same care and thoughtfulness to real estate, helping families find homes and building lasting connections in his community.
He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Hazel; his three sons, George, Chris, and Morris; his younger brother, Wanley; and five grandchildren, Anthony, Alexis, Isaac, Chance, and Carter, who each brought him immense pride and joy. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family, all of whom were touched by his kindness and guidance.
George will be remembered not only for the global impact of his work but for the love, patience, and integrity he poured into his family and friendships. His legacy lives on in every life he touched with a word of encouragement, a thoughtful gesture, or a helping hand.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Capital Community Church, 20430 Ashburn Village Blvd, Ashburn, VA 20147. A private burial for the immediate family will follow.
