I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry—Psalms 40:1
It is with great sadness that we announce the heavenly home-going of our Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, and Cousin, Florence Sophie “Barbie” N’Tow Lloyd. Barbie, to all who knew her, passed away on Wednesday, January 6th, 2021 after a brief medical emergency in Silver Spring, Maryland, the United States of America.
Though we lost our mother, she Lives, in the great continuum of life. Like the never ceasing waves of the oceans, so flows the life of our mother, Florence “Barbie”. She was the daughter of Moses N’tow, and Julia Smith NTow, of Schiefflin, Liberia. Her father was one who communed with the great African Statesman Kwame Nkrumah, the founding leader of Ghana. In her mother Julia Smith NTow, she was the offspring of a great family line which extends from the shores of the Americas to Africa.
She received her early education and schooling at Saint Theresa Convent, a Catholic School for Girls, in Monrovia Liberia. In her formative years, she fully exhibited a reserved persona with grace and sophistication through the disciple of Christian culture. These values shaped her life beyond her school days, and through her last moments. With further education and advanced professional experience, she went on to serve the Liberian government as an administrator at the Ministry of Finance before relocating to the United States.
While in the U.S., she remained a resourceful member of her church and community. The strength of her personality and quest to contribute meaningfully to society took her many places, and landed her in the company of great minds. In this quest, she intersected with history in the making when she met Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows Queens, New York City as she was stationed at the Africa/Liberia exhibit.
Throughout her life, her faith and devotion to God remained an unshakable source of her strength. In her quiet moments, she found comfort in prayer and meditation. We, and some yet to be born, are all threads in the tapestry of lives God has woven through our dear mother, Florence, who has now transitioned into the heavenly realm to join her forebears.
She is survived by her children: Samuel Montgomery, Tracy Montgomery, and Amelia Lloyd-Bonville (Carl); her sister, Estena N’Tow; grandchildren: Florence Barbie Pritchett (TJ), Samantha Montgomery, David Montgomery, and Siana Bonville; great grandchildren: Makayla Pritchett, Micah Pritchett, and a host of relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Nathaniel Timothy Lloyd, and her sister, Martha N’Tow. She was also predeceased by her previous husband, J.C. Montgomery, and her parents, Moses Solomon N’Tow, and Julia Smith N’Tow. MAY HER SOUL REST IN PEACE
Thanks to all who have blessed our “Barbie” with your love and kind affection.
