Fazeh L. Duyen, fondly known as Betty, 78, peacefully transitioned on Thursday, November 09, 2023, at the Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey.
She was born on February 18, 1945, to the union of Kuluboh Golovelga and Sumo Yarkpawolo Duyen in Pleebo, Maryland County, Liberia. Betty was raised in the Zorzor District before she moved to the capital city of Monrovia. Her family settled in the ‘Buzzie Quarters’ where she attended Saint Theresa Convent Catholic School. While in elementary school she participated in multiple sports such as basketball, soccer, volleyball, and she ran track and field. Betty once represented Liberia with the Girls basketball team at the International West African Basketball Tournament in the Central Africa country known as the Demographic Republic of the Congo. She attended high school at Ricks Institute, a learning and faith community of the Liberia Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention, Inc. At the age of 19, Betty, received a grant by the late 19th and longest-serving president in Liberian history, William V.S Tubman, which granted her the opportunity to move the United States in 1964 to Brooklyn, New York where she continued her high school education. During this time, she met her high school sweetheart, and basketball athlete, Alwyn Sacko, whom she married. From this union, their daughter, Danielle H. Sacko, was born in 1967. In later years, Betty, moved on and settled in Newark, New Jersey to raise her daughter, Danielle. She began her career with the United States Post Office and continued her education.
Betty was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and confidant. She is predeceased by her parents Kuluboh Golovelga and Sumo Yarkpawolo; and her 7 siblings: Aaron Sumo Kennedy, Sr.; Krubosumo Duyen (Duyenku), George K. Duyen, Robert B. Duyen, Sr., Kebeh Vayan Zaza, and Darku Duyen. She is survived by her daughter, Danielle Sacko (Newark, New Jersey), her younger brother, Peter T. Dunye (Allentown, Pennsylvania), her nephew and caregiver, Robert Duyen Jr. (Newark, New Jersey), her great niece and caregiver, Zebia Weh-Braddy (Newark, New Jersey), a host of nieces and nephews around the world; and dear friends in the United States and back home in Liberia. Betty will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who adored her.
