— The announcement by Cuttington University comes at a time when the country is grappling with a shortage of skilled professionals to address the various development challenges.
Cuttington University, one of Liberia’s most prestigious academic institutions, is expected to become the first and only university in the country to offer Ph.D.
Cuttington, which is the oldest private university in sub-Saharan Africa is expected to make the announcement today — starting with Theology and Ministry.
According to a 2015 report by the World Bank, Liberia had a shortage of qualified professors and researchers with a Ph.D. degree, which impacted the quality of tertiary education in the country.
Dr. Romelle A. Horton, President of Cuttington University, noted that the Ph.D. program is part of the University’s efforts to enhance its academic offerings and provide an opportunity for Liberian students to pursue doctoral degrees without leaving the country.
Horton, who is a Ph. D holder, said the program would soon be expanded to other fields and is expected to provide the highest level of academic training for professionals, to help address critical issues facing the country’s religious sector.
The President of Cuttington University added that the launch of the Ph.D. program is a testament to the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and its mission to develop the human capital necessary for Liberia’s economic and social development.
According to Horton, the announcement by Cuttington University comes at a time when the country is grappling with a shortage of skilled professionals to address the various development challenges.
