Strong Advocate for the Transformation of Boystown Junction and the Development of a Cleaner, Safer, and More Beautiful Marshall Community
On Sunday morning, September 6, 2026, the Liberia National Police conducted an operation to clear marketers from Boystown Junction. The action forms part of ongoing efforts to improve traffic flow, protect public safety, and restore order to one of the most important junctions along the Roberts International Airport–Monrovia corridor.
I publicly commend the leadership and officers of the Liberia National Police for taking this necessary step. For several years, Boystown Junction had gradually descended into disorder. Marketers occupied portions of the main road, while motorcycles and kehkehs competed for limited space with pedestrians and other vehicles. The situation created traffic congestion, placed lives at risk, and damaged the appearance of a community that serves as an unofficial gateway to Liberia.
Those of us who have consistently advocated for the transformation of Boystown Junction understand that clearing the roadway is only the beginning. Enforcement must be followed by a practical and humane solution for the affected marketers. These are hardworking Liberians trying to provide for their families, and they deserve a safe, clean, and properly organized place to conduct their businesses.
I therefore commend Margibi County Senior Senator Emmanuel J. Nuquay for proactively beginning the construction of a market at the site originally designated for that purpose. His intervention demonstrates leadership and provides a strong foundation upon which the Government, the community, and other partners can build.
The market currently being constructed by Senator Nuquay is at an early stage. This gives us a golden opportunity to improve the design before the project advances further. While the proposed one-level structure is an important beginning, it may not provide enough space to accommodate all the marketers who must be permanently relocated from the highway, sidewalks, community entrances, and surrounding streets.
I am therefore calling upon the Government of Liberia to complement Senator Nuquay’s initiative by providing the technical and financial support needed to develop the project into a modern three-level market. Building upward would make better use of the limited land and create enough space to accommodate more marketers without extending commercial activities into nearby residential areas.
This project presents an opportunity to achieve two equally important objectives: restoring order to Boystown Junction and protecting the livelihoods of the affected marketers. Public safety and economic survival should not be treated as opposing concerns. With proper planning and collective action, we can accomplish both.
Residents, property owners, professionals, businesspeople, and friends of the Boystown–Marshall community must also be prepared to contribute. We cannot continue complaining about the condition of the junction while leaving the entire responsibility to the Government and Senator Nuquay. A transparent community fundraising initiative should be established to mobilize financial resources, professional expertise, construction materials, and other forms of support.
The police have done their part by beginning the process of restoring order. Senator Nuquay has done his part by initiating the construction of the market. The Government and the community must now do their part by helping to transform the project into a permanent solution.
