“In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:6
With hearts anchored in faith, the Borsay, Payne, Giddings, Keller, Traub and Jensen families announce the homegoing of Mrs. Priscilla Y. Payne, lovingly known as Sister, Aunty, Aunt Priscilla, Grandma, or PYP.
Priscilla Y. Payne was a virtuous woman who loved God with her whole heart. A registered nurse practitioner, educator and community servant. A devoted wife, she served alongside her husband, the late Bishop Emeritus Roland J. Payne of the Lutheran Church in Liberia.
Priscila was honored by then Liberian President William R. Tolbert, Jr., in recognition of her outstanding service to communities throughout the country. She devoted nineteen years to Eternal Love Winning Africa (ELWA) hospital in Liberia- serving 9 years as a staff nurse and 10 years as a Director of Nursing Service. She also served as a public health nurse and taught at the National School of Nursing for four years . She founded the first national Lutheran Church Women’s Organization and served as its president for six years.
Fulfilling a lifelong dream, Priscilla later founded the Roland J. Payne Center of Hope Orphanage in Sanoyea Bong County, Liberia, with the support of family and friends. The orphanage provided care, education, and hope to orphaned and homeless children. In her later years, she authored and published My Hero -The Non-Quitter, a biography honoring the life, legacy and ministry of her late husband. Priscilla Payne was a true disciple of Christ, faithfully reflecting her Lord and Savior in word, service, and actions.
In her 95th year, she peacefully transitioned from this earthly life to eternal rest on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, in Crofton, Maryland, USA. A devoted servant of God, her life reflected unwavering faith, love for family, and obedience to the Lord’s calling. Though she will be deeply missed, we rejoice in the assurance that she now rests in the presence of her Savior.
“I would like to pass on these values of honesty, to be helpful to those who truly need help, and to serve God in a true manner and not in pretense. Continue to love one another. With God, all things are possible.” ~ Priscilla Y. Payne
