It is with profound sorrow and deep grief that the McCritty, Greaves, Payne, and Witherspoon families announce the sudden passing of our beloved and irreplaceable pillar, A. Wilmot McCritty, Jr. – an affectionate, faithful husband, ever-present father, cherished brother, supportive uncle, nephew, cousin, and loyal friend. His loss leaves a void that can never be filled in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
This heartbreaking event occurred on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 7:12 p.m., at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Georgia.
- Wilmot McCritty, Jr., affectionately known as Junior, Wil, Will Jr., Bill, and fondly called by many, “Brodo,” “Short,” “Short-Critty,” and “Joe Blow,” was born on June 30, 1963, at Lamco Hospital in Lower Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, Republic of Liberia, to the union of his late parents, Honorable Augustus Wilmot McCritty, Sr. and educator Dolly E. Payne-McCritty-Massaquoi.
Wilmot Jr.’s journey of life and learning spanned several esteemed institutions. His educational path led him from Lamco International School in Yekepa, to Carroll High School in Grassfield, Nimba County; St. Peter’s Claver High School in Buchanan; the University of Liberia in Monrovia; and ultimately to Prairie View A&M University in Texas, USA, where he pursued Architectural Engineering.
Endowed with extraordinary creativity, Wilmot Jr. was a gifted musician who played the bass guitar with several renowned groups, including the Electricuters, Songhai, Jajaband, and Aaron Lewis’ Madusa. His deep appreciation for music and the arts reflected the vibrancy and rhythm with which he approached life itself.
He was admired not only for his artistic brilliance but also for his remarkable versatility as a talented craftsman, an accomplished athlete in both soccer and basketball, a celebrated ping pong champion at Carroll High School, and an inspired artist, actor, and composer.
A devout Episcopalian, Wilmot Jr. lived his faith through humility, generosity, and quiet strength. His brilliance, creativity, and gentle spirit touched countless lives and will forever resonate in the hearts of all who knew him.
Wilmot Jr. is survived by his one true love, his devoted wife, Joyce N. Greaves-McCritty; his cherished sons, Wilmot “Bill” McCritty III and Eugene Smith; his proud siblings, Lars Tomoe McCritty, Lynn McCritty, Augustus “Boya” Taylor, Lysander McCritty, Benjamin Payne, Winnifred McCritty, and Dr. Anthony Bayogar McCritty, Sr, along with several other siblings his parents reared.
He also leaves behind a host of adoring nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members spanning the United States, Liberia, and beyond.
