Dr. Abdul Rahman L Massaquoi, fondly known by his family as “Duraman” or “uncle Duraman” passed away on Thursday September 11, 2025, at his home in Visalia, California.
Dr. Abdul Rahman Massaquoi was born in Cape Mount County in the Republic of Liberia on October 10, 1947. His parents were the late Paramount Chief Mannah Luseini Massaquoi and late Madam Kula Kemokai-Massaquoi.
Dr. Abdul Rahman L Massaquoi moved to Sierra Leone at an early age, where he started his elementary education. After completing his early stages of education, Dr. Massaquoi attended the Government Secondary School in Bo (Bo School) until he graduated and moved to Freetown. When he moved to Freetown, he attended Saint Edwards Secondary school and completed his sixth form.
Dr. Massaquoi was privileged to have earned an opportunity to study medicine in
Leningrad, in the then Soviet Union. Upon successfully completing his medical studies, he returned to Sierra Leone and worked in the Connaught /PCMH hospitals in Freetown. Looking for better opportunities, he enlisted in the Sierra Leone military as a cadet and was sent to Egypt, where he received his Military training. Upon returning to Sierra Leone, he worked in the Military hospital, where he attained the level of a Captain in the Sierra Leone Military Force. He was a well-known physician and was a private medical consultant to the then president of Sierra Leone “Siaka P Stevens.
Dr. Abdul Massaquoi later returned home to Liberia, where he excelled in his profession. He served in many capacities at the Ministry of Health in Monrovia, Liberia. He also, briefly worked in the private medical field. To further his education, Dr. Massaquoi went to the United Kingdom, for post graduate studies in tropical diseases. Upon completion, he worked in London and shortly relocated to the United States.
Dr. Massaquoi worked in many areas including teaching at Charles Drew University in California and moved to Visalia for a better opportunity, and worked for the San Joaquan Valley College as an Academic Coordinator for many years, before he retired.
Dr. Abdul Rahman Massaquoi was married to late Rhonda Reidel Massaquoi “the love of his life” and he is survived by his children: Margaret, MaJenneh, Foday, Abdul and MaKula. He was pre–deceased by his eldest son Osmond. His grandchildren: Siatta, Miatta, Fanta, Franklyn, Leelo, Dean, Audrey, Massah and Abdulai. He is also survived by a host of family members including his sisters and brothers in the USA, Sierra Leone and Liberia. His nieces, nephews, grandnieces/nephews, in-laws and many friends.
We thank the Almighty for Dr. Abdul Rahman’s life and ask for God’s Mercy and forgiveness for any wrongs he may have committed on this earth. May his soul rest in perfect, serene and inviolable peace.
