With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Comfort Arku Merchant, daughter of the late Chief James D. Arku and Sando Jallah, who peacefully transitioned on Sunday, February 1, 2026.
Comfort was love made visible. She had a rare gift for making people feel welcomed, seen, and valued from the very first moment. Her warmth, gentle humor, and kind spirit left lasting impressions, and her presence lingered long after she left the room.
She was a devoted wife to Joseph Merchant; a loving and proud mother to James Lavala jr., Ernest Jenkins jr., and Charles Dundas; and the forever mother of her precious son, the late Siafa Lavala, whom she now joins in eternal peace. Comfort was a cherished mother-in-law to Peggy Dundas and a deeply loved grandmother to Claire Dundas, affectionately known as Grandma Princess. She was also a beloved sister to all her brothers and sisters, especially Fatu Tarawali, a devoted aunt, and a trusted friend and confidant to all who knew her.
Comfort lived with a forgiving heart that defined her life. She chose grace when it was difficult and compassion when it mattered most. That spirit of forgiveness drew people to her and created bonds that endured through time.
Though her absence leaves an immeasurable void, her love remains ever-present. We are grateful for every lesson she taught, every quiet act of kindness she extended, and every moment of love she shared so freely. She loved deeply—and we felt it every day.
Comfort Arku Merchant will forever remain our mother, grandmother, sister, and guiding light.
