With deep sorrow, yet with unwavering faith in God, the Myers family announces the peaceful passing of our beloved father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, mentor, and friend, Ambassador Gabriel T. Myers Sr., affectionately known to his children as “Papay.” He was 85 years old.
Ambassador Myers’ earthly journey ended on July 17, 2026, at ELWA Hospital in Monrovia, Liberia.
Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we rejoice in the remarkable life he lived—a life characterized by faith, integrity, service, leadership, and unwavering devotion to God, his family, and his country.
Gabriel T. Myers was born on July 26, 1940, in Gidigloh Village, Grand Gedeh County, unto the union of Jerry Glordy Myers and Elizabeth Myers. He grew up on the Assembly of God mission established by his father, a pioneering Christian missionary who left traditional African religion to embrace Christianity and founded the first Christian mission in Konobo District, Grand Gedeh County. Ambassador Myers continued that legacy of faith and worshipped at First Assembly of God Church in Monrovia, Liberia.
He attended primary and junior high school at Albert Memorial Institute from 1950 to 1962. He graduated from Martha Tubman High School in 1964 and later pursued an associate degree in accounting.
Ambassador Myers was a resolute public servant who devoted many years of his professional life to serving Liberia. He worked as an accountant at Cubic and the Montserrado Group of Companies. He later served as Chief of Finance at the Liberia National Police; Chief of Protocol at the Executive Mansion of Liberia from 1984 to 1986; Liberia’s Ambassador to Italy from 1986 to 1988; and Chief Disbursing Officer at the Ministry of Finance in 1988.
During the Liberian civil war, Ambassador Myers left Liberia and settled with his family in Côte d’Ivoire in 1990. He relocated to the United States in 1992, where he later served as a correctional officer in Baltimore, Maryland.
While in the United States, Ambassador Myers remained committed to Liberia and his community. He supported several Liberian community organizations and served as Vice President of the New Jersey Chapter of the Grand Gedeh Association of America (GGAA).
Ambassador Myers leaves to mourn his loss nine daughters: Victoria Zeor Myers, Dorothy Zuporleh Myers, Deborah Yeoh, Louise Myers, Josephine Judy Myers, Doris Myers, Patience Yeadeah Myers-Martin, Blossom Anastasia Nyepon Myers and Rachel Baisy Wongbor Myers; three sons: Gabriel T. Myers Jr., Lester Bishop Myers, and Teddy Myers; one sister, Edith Myers; three brothers, Johnny Z. Myers, Paul Y. Myers Sr., and Samuel Tarr Myers; two former wives, Mrs. Rachel Myers and Viola Davis; twenty-three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was predeceased by his grandson, Sonny Boy Liway; six siblings, Mary Myers-Tarway, Elisah Clayzon Myers, Jessy B. Myers, Sally Myers-Garlo, Joe Y. Myers Sr., and Esther Myers; and two former wives, Annie Cooper-Myers and Chris Brooks.
Ambassador Gabriel T. Myers Sr. will be remembered for his steadfast faith, distinguished public service, commitment to his country and community, and devotion to his family. His legacy will live on through his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and the many lives he touched throughout his years of service.
