
Stephen J. Uymah, 69, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 3, 2025 with his family by his side.
Stephen was born in Monrovia, Liberia on September 7, 1955, the eldest son of the late Johnny Nyumah and Konah Kwazia. He grew up alongside his late sister, Kemah Nyumah, and honorably served in the Liberian Criminal Investigation Division until immigrating and moving to The Bronx in 1988. Stephen obtained an Associate’s Degree in Accounting and was employed in various professions until his retirement in 2021.
He loved Connecticut and was a resident of Meriden for over 20 years. He enjoyed cooking, country music, driving his Acuras, and sharing stories about his life at his home with his friends and family. He was a mentor and godfather to many, and always took the opportunity to teach a life lesson to someone.
He is survived by his children Siah Nyumah Lakay, Konah Uymah and Katherine Uymah, his former wife Rachel Hansen-Uymah; his stepchildren Jamesetta G. Dorbor, Robert V. Gooding, Venus G. Kemoon and James T. Gooding.
Brothers Morris Johnson, Cephas F. Dolo, Jerry Nyumah, Alfred Nyumah, and Samuel N. Dolo; sisters Beatrice Dolo, Oretha Nyumah, Taiwa Nyumah Zeon, and Yawah Dolo.
Many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and all of the family he gained throughout his life.
Stephen’s family will receive relatives and friends at the Meriden Memorial Funeral Home, 450 Broad St., Friday, January 31, 2025, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. A funeral service in celebration of his life and legacy will begin at 11 a.m. He will be laid to rest in Walnut Grove Cemetery in Meriden. A livestream of his funeral will begin at 11 a.m. U.S. EST on Facebook Live.
