With heavy hearts, the Roberts, Freeman, Sombai, Fahnbulleh, Paasewe and Camanor families announce the sudden home-going of their beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, auntie, cousin and friend, Mother Shirley Miatta Tetee Freeman Roberts, at age 84. She transitioned peacefully on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at her home in Monrovia, Liberia, surrounded by family and friends.
Ma Miatta, as she was affectionately called, was born in Gorhn, Tewor District, Grand Cape Mount County on July 2, 1938. She was the daughter of Mr. Samuel P. Freeman and Madam Kula Borbor Paasewe, both of whom predeceased her. She was married to Simeon B. Roberts, Sr., who also predeceased her.
Ma Miatta was an educator, mentor, role model, businesswoman, humanitarian, and strong pillar of strength in her family and community. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and sewing, and she always had that extra plate of food to share with anyone who stopped by.
She leaves to mourn her home-going and celebrate her life, her children Varney D. Freeman, (Donna), Kornor Freeman Camanor, Pandora Roberts Hall, Simeon B. Roberts, Jr.(Yama), Ciatta Darker (Jonathan), Osello Mardea Roberts Cromber, Emma Chinco Roberts, Omaru Roberts, Tejantsie Roberts, Ophelia T. Roberts, Prudence Roberts, William B. Roberts, Jimmy Kiazolu, Boima Martin, Mohammed Kiadi, Samuel Papayou Williams, Yassa, Topoe, and Zenebou Etal. Grand children: Vanessa Miatta Freeman Manneh(Bryant) Arteria, Sarafina Freeman, LaVerne Freeman, Varne Freeman, Shatia Freeman, Nyshawn Freeman, Nyasia Freeman, Xaiver Freeman, Jaylin Freeman, Miatta K. Camanor, Dr. Sia Wata Camanor, Sia Vicalee Camanor, Saa Sembe Camanor, Menah Macolo, Agnes Kamara Paylay, Yatta Sonah George (Matthew), Patience Yealu, Taffy Verdier, Shirley Welmela Hall, Hans Hall, Jade Lyons, Emmanuel Roberts,
Korpo Roberts, Sando Roberts, Kolu Roberts, Simeon Roberts III, Anton Roberts, Tari Roberts, Simone, Simona, Kornor Kamara, Maggie Darker, and Jonathan Darker, Jr.
Also surviving Ma Miatta are her siblings: Georgia Freeman, Rita Pennoh, Varney Sesay, Hawa Massaqoui, Annie Coleman (Robert), Marie Draper, Jenneh Massaquoi, and Fatu Freeman (Varney). Nieces and nephews include: Musu Massaquoi, Kula Pennoh, Arthur Pennoh, Tamu Boima Fahnbulleh, Miatta Paasewe, Ansu Coleman, Lansana Paasewe, Sando Kiatamba, Molly Kiatamba, Varney Deygbo (Massa), Joshua Bai Wilson (Muna). Lamie Nimely, Hawa Jeje Deygbo, Kemah Gray, Sando Munvee Johnson, Sharon Gbessie Morris, Emma, Kornor Brown, Jovetta Hannah Freeman, Sensee Freeman, Eric Freeman, Fred Snorton, Bobby Coleman, Asatue Kumeh, Edwin Gartor Johnson, Tamu Junior Haines, Jusufu Haines and Sando Haines. She survived by fifteen great granchildren. Cousins include: Dr. S. Vanii Freeman, Mrs. Mabasi Totimeh, J. Bai Paasewe, J.B. Konuwa, and Dr. Henry Konuwa, as well as her devoted caregivers Varney and Massa Deygbo.
In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was also predeceased by her uncle J. Bai Paasewe; brothers: Jusufu Paasewe, Charles B.Fahnbulleh, Henry B. Freeman, Eric Freeman, Samuel P. Freeman, Embric Freeman, Arthur Freeman; Sisters: Mary Haines, Pauline Freeman and Hannah Kjelsson.
She will also be missed by the St. Wade Episcopal Church, Good Shepherd Episcopal Church family, Gardnersville Wesleyan Church, and the Swagger-Borbor Island Community in Gardnersville.
Funeral arrangements are as follows:
Body Removal from the A.B. Roberts Funeral Home: Friday, November 11th at 4 p.m.
Wake Keeping: November Friday, 11th at St. Wade Episcopal Church, Stephen
Tolbert Estate, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., to be followed by silent wake keeping and coffee at Dr. Ivan Camanor’s Residence, Bassa Town Opposite Stephen Tolbert Estate 9:30 p.m. – 12 a.m.
Funeral Services: Saturday, November 12th at 9 a.m. St. Wade Episcopal Church, Stephen Tolbert Estate.
Interment: Weelor, Tewor District, Grand Cape Mount County immediately,
following the funeral services.
