It is with profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of Mother Rebecca Cheaneh Doe, who departed this life peacefully on December 14, 2024. Born on December 24, 1947, in Liberia, she was the beloved daughter of the late Mr. James Doe and Mrs. Martha Doe.
Mother Rebecca’s journey in life was deeply rooted in faith, education, and perseverance. She began her early education at St. Teresa’s Convent School, a foundation that shaped her future despite challenges. Her education was interrupted in 1961 when she became a mother to her cherished son, Eminent Emmanuel S. Wettee, and she displayed remarkable resilience and determination. The foundation she received at St. Teresa’s Convent enabled her success in Liberia and the United States.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. James Doe and Mrs. Martha Doe; her brothers Josiah Doe and James Doe; and her sisters, Eliza Doe and Mrs. Margaret Mitchell.
A devoted Christian, Mother Rebecca was a member of the Don Stewart Christ Pentecost Church in Liberia, where her golden voice graced the mass choir. Her faith and service earned her numerous accolades, including “Mother,” “Certificate of Distinction,” and “Special Mother.” Upon migrating to the United States, she became one of the founding members of the River of Life Church in Columbus, Ohio. Her faithfulness and contributions were recognized by numerous organizations, including Liberians in Columbus, Inc. (LICI), KRAO, and Sinoe County groups, who honored her with awards like “Mother of the Year” and “Phenomenal Woman.”
Mother Rebecca valued hard work and independence. She worked at ECHO Manor Extended Care for several years before retiring in 2007 due to health challenges. Known for her candid spirit, she spoke her mind freely, leaving a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Her life was filled with memorable moments that reflected her strength, humor, and determination. Among these was her journey to the United States, where she was granted political asylum on November 20, 2001, and her proud achievement of becoming a U.S. citizen, attributing her success to her education in Liberia.
Mother Rebecca leaves to mourn her legacy:
- Children: Eminent Emmanuel Sonnyboy Wettee (son) and Charlotte Sirleaf (daughter).
- Grandchildren: Mrs. Wetlyne Douglas, Madam Eliza Doe Flahn, Edet Wettee, J. Nicholas Wettee, Shadrack Wettee, and Barlu Wettee.
- Great-grandchildren: Shadrach Wettee Jr., Julius M. Wettee, and others to be named.
She was preceded by her siblings, Margaret Smith Mitchell, Eliza Belloh Doe, and Josiah K. Doe, and is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews, including:
- Nieces: Sarah Mitchell, Evelyn Michelle, Venus Michelle Lavitoe, Eliza Belloh, Nora T. Doe, and Tannah Doe.

- Grandnephews: Mandela Kanmoh, Reginald T. Gibson, Justin V. Kollie, John Sekeh, and Josiah Doe Jr.
